Erin McCarthy – Author

Sweet (True Believers, #2)
We are talking today with author, Erin McCarthy. Her newest book, Sweet, which is the second book in the True Believer series, is now available.

Erin has been writing romance for over 10 years now, nominated for various awards, and has 38 published books and novellas, including young adult, new adult, stories about race car drivers, vampires, ghosts, witches, voodoo, and lots and lots and lots of tattooed bad boys. So my question is what rock have I been living under that I completely missed her?

I had the pleasure of reading True earlier this year and I absolutely loved it. The characters were moving and the plot was unexpected. It featured not only a smart but shy and socially awkward girl (Rory) who was in love with the hot, sexy bad boy but feared he couldn’t love someone like her, but it also featured our bad boy (Tyler) from the bad part of town with the drug addicted mother who was in love with the pretty, smart good girl and who feared she couldn’t love someone like him. You must read it!

Good morning, Erin. Thank you for stopping by to speak with us.

Thanks!

Your stories were first published in 2002. But have you always known you were going to be a writer?

I always wanted to be a writer, that didn’t mean I thought I would be. I won a contest in first grade for young writers and I was hooked (and experienced a classmate lifting a story idea in third grade) but I was told it wouldn’t be practical. I went to college to be a lawyer, found out I was pregnant, dropped out, and became a writer. Guess I showed them. LOL. I’m not advocating dropping out of school, but honestly, my daughter was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Not only was she the greatest gift imaginable, she made writing possible for me, because would I have written if I’d been practicing law? Probably not.

Admit it. You have a thing for the tattooed bad boys. Do you like your tattoos to be the more colorful designs or the intricate monocolor designs?

I freely admit it. Shoes, booze, and boys with tattoos. 😉 I don’t have a preference of color or black ink, but I do like there to be some planning involved. I prefer a full sleeve that is all integrated together over random tats in various spots.

You have many, many highly rated books out there and I have obviously just moved my rock and crawled out of my cave of ignorance. Which of your books is your favorite and which would you recommend to me get started?
Flat-Out Sexy (Fast Track, #1)
Well, what to recommend depends on what you like, but if you’re into contemporaries, start with the first in my Fast Track series, FLAT OUT SEXY. It’s a personal favorite anyway from that series. I also love the dark paranormal I wrote, MY IMMORTAL because it stretched me an author and let me play around with a different structure.

You have covered a lot of different genres in your writing. When you are at home relaxing, what do you like to read or do you prefer to get away from books when you are not writing your own?

High Stakes (Vegas Vampires, #1)Mostly I read books for research or my book club selections. We try to do a non-fiction and a fiction every month, and this has been great for me because I am writing books I never would have thought to try. It keeps me fresh as a writer.

The one thing that I was unhappy about when I finished True is that I would have liked an epilogue at the end. Life wasn’t turning out exactly how Rory and Tyler had planned, but their issues weren’t insurmountable and I was interested to know how you thought their future would shape up. I didn’t know yet that there was more story to be told. Yay!

True (True Believers, #1)

There are bonus scenes that will available in April of 2014 when the print book is released. But to be totally honest, you don’t get full on answers because life isn’t that tidy. Tyler is not going to just walk away from his conviction straight into a bright and happy future career wise. As the series continues, you’ll see more of them of course and at the end of the fourth book, I think you’ll be satisfied with where everyone is. Time wise it’s two years after the beginning of TRUE.

In Book #2, we spend more time with Riley, Tyler’s older brother who we only met briefly in True. We also get to know Jessica Sweet, one of Rory’s best friends. In True, Jessica appeared to be a shallow, party girl but who truly cared for her friends. In Sweet, we learn there is much more to Jessica than who she shows to others.

Can you give us a hint of who else is trying to get their story told in this series?

Robin’s story will be told in BELIEVE, out in January 2014. Book four, which doesn’t have a title yet (but is written!) will be out in June 2014 and it is Kylie’s story.

Erin, thank you so much for talking with us today. I am going to my computer now and download some more books and I will be looking out for more great stories.

Thanks!
